Application Tips

Applying to the University of Rwanda is straightforward if you prepare ahead. Here is how to give yourself the best chance.

• Start immediately. The application window opened on 22 September 2026 and closes on 5 October 2026. That is roughly two weeks. Do not wait until the final days.

• Have your documents ready before you start. You will need:

  • A personal email address you can access regularly.

  • A valid National ID.

  • A personal mobile phone number.

  • Your Senior Six Index Number (if you completed Senior Six in Rwanda).

  • Supporting documents for international applicants or those with foreign qualifications.

• Check the programme-specific entry requirements. Minimum entry requirements vary by programme. These are published on the University of Rwanda website together with the call for applications. Read them carefully before selecting your programmes.

• Enter your Senior Six Index Number correctly. If you completed Senior Six in Rwanda, the system will automatically retrieve your information from NESA. An incorrect Index Number could delay or block your application.

• Choose your three programmes wisely. Based on your Senior Six combination, the system will display eligible programmes. You may select up to three. Think about your strengths, interests, and career goals. You can change your selections during the application period, provided it is before the deadline.

• Use a personal email you check often. Your UR Reference Number and PIN will be sent to your email address. If you use an email you rarely check, you may miss critical updates.

• Pay the application fee correctly. The fee is non-refundable:

  • Rwandan and EAC citizens: FRW 5,000

  • International applicants: FRW 6,000

  • Use your UR Reference Number as the Payer Code when paying through the Urubuto System.

  • Payment options include Bank of Kigali (BK) counter, MTN Mobile Money using *775#, BK App, Internet Banking, or the Urubuto online payment platform.

  • Double-check that you enter the correct UR Reference Number. Incorrect payment details can delay your application.

• Upload the right documents if required. International applicants and those holding equivalence certificates must upload:

  • Equivalence Certificate

  • Senior Six Certificate

  • Copy of Passport

  • National ID (for Rwandan applicants)

• Keep your UR Reference Number and PIN safe. You will need them for future use, including checking your application status and admission outcomes.

• Submit before the deadline. Late applications are not accepted. Submit at least a day or two early to avoid last-minute technical problems.

How to Apply

Follow these steps carefully to complete your application.

Step 1: Generate Your University of Rwanda Reference Number

1. Go to the University of Rwanda Online Application Portal: https://applications.ur.ac.rw/

2. If you completed Senior Six in Rwanda, enter your Senior Six Index Number. The system will automatically retrieve your information from the National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA).

3. Review the displayed information, complete the remaining required fields, and submit.

4. After successful submission, the system will generate a UR Reference Number and PIN. These will be sent to your personal email address.

5. International applicants and Rwandan applicants with foreign qualifications and an official Equivalence Certificate must also complete the online application. Their UR Reference Number and PIN will be generated after successful submission.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

1. Log in to the application system using your UR Reference Number and PIN.

2. For Rwandan Senior Six graduates, your results from NESA will be retrieved and displayed.

3. Based on your Senior Six combination, the system will display eligible programmes.

4. Select up to three programmes of your choice. You may change your selections during the application period, provided changes are made before the deadline.

5. International applicants and equivalence holders must upload the required supporting documents:

   • Equivalence Certificate

   • Senior Six Certificate

   • Copy of Passport

   • National ID for Rwandan applicants

6. Pay the application fee:

   • Rwandan and EAC citizens: FRW 5,000

   • International applicants: FRW 6,000

   • Use your UR Reference Number as the Payer Code.

7. Submit your application.
