The Mandela Washington Fellowship 2027 is now accepting applications from young African leaders who are making a positive difference in their communities, countries, and professional sectors. This is the flagship program of the U.S. Government's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), and it brings approximately 550 emerging African leaders to the United States in June 2027 for a six-week executive-style leadership development experience.

The Fellowship is designed for accomplished young professionals and community leaders between the ages of 25 and 35 who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and a commitment to creating positive change. Exceptional applicants aged 21 to 24 may also be considered. Application Tips

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is highly competitive, with thousands of applicants from across Sub-Saharan Africa. To give yourself the best chance, follow these practical tips.

• Check your eligibility first. You must be a citizen of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country (including Rwanda), a resident of that country, and permanently residing there from February 1, 2027, through the beginning of the Fellowship in June 2027. You must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

• Confirm your age. The Fellowship is designed for professionals aged 25 to 35. Exceptional applicants aged 21 to 24 may also be considered. Be ready to provide documentation confirming your age.

• Demonstrate leadership and innovation. The selection committee is looking for young leaders who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and a commitment to creating positive change. In your application, share specific examples of how you have led, created change, or served your community.

• Check your J-1 visa eligibility. You must be eligible for a U.S. J-1 visa. Review the requirements and ensure your record is clean.

• Plan for the pre-departure orientation. Finalists must participate in a mandatory in-person pre-departure orientation. Plan ahead for this commitment.

• Note that dependents are not allowed. Fellows are not permitted to bring dependents, including spouses or children, during the Fellowship. Plan accordingly.

Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

• Citizen of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country (including Rwanda).

• Resident of that country and permanently residing there from February 1, 2027, through the beginning of the Fellowship in June 2027.

• Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

• Eligible for a U.S. J-1 visa.

• Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

• Must not have previously participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

• Must not be an employee or immediate family member of an employee of the U.S. Government, including U.S. embassies, consulates, or other U.S. Government entities.

• Current IREX employees and consultants, as well as their immediate family members, are also not eligible for IREX-implemented grant programs.
