Overview

Nyungwe Management Company Ltd (NMC Ltd) is seeking 20 qualified and motivated Forest Restoration Team Leaders to support the implementation of a major forest restoration initiative within Nyungwe National Park.

Established through a long-term partnership between the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks Network (APN), Nyungwe Management Company is responsible for managing Nyungwe National Park under a 20-year management agreement that began in October 2020.

The successful candidates will lead field teams responsible for restoring degraded forest ecosystems through Assisted Natural Forest Regeneration (ANFR) as part of the project "Building Resilience of Vulnerable Communities to Climate Variability in Rwanda's Congo Nile Divide (CND) Region through Forest and Landscape Restoration."

This large-scale restoration initiative aims to rehabilitate approximately 4,500 hectares of indigenous forest, contributing to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable natural resource management.

Responsibilities

Field Restoration Activities

The successful candidates will:

  • Lead daily Assisted Natural Forest Regeneration (ANFR) activities.
  • Supervise fern cutting and vegetation management.
  • Coordinate site maintenance activities.
  • Support forest restoration monitoring.
  • Ensure restoration activities comply with approved technical guidelines.
Team Leadership & Supervision

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising casual laborers during field operations.
  • Allocating daily tasks to restoration teams.
  • Monitoring work progress and productivity.
  • Providing on-site coaching and technical guidance.
  • Promoting teamwork, discipline, and professional conduct.
  • Supporting capacity building through practical field training.
Monitoring & Data Collection

The Team Leaders will:

  • Collect GPS coordinates and field monitoring data.
  • Record seedling survival and growth information.
  • Monitor restoration progress.
  • Prepare regular reports for the Forest Restoration Field Coordinator.
  • Report operational challenges and environmental observations promptly.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

The role also includes:

  • Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
  • Monitoring safe use of field equipment and tools.
  • Identifying potential workplace hazards.
  • Taking immediate corrective action when safety risks arise.
  • Promoting environmentally responsible field practices.

Requirements

Education

Applicants should possess:

  • Certificate (A2) or Diploma (A1) in:
    • Forestry
    • Environmental Management
    • Natural Resource Management
    • Agriculture
    • Related discipline
Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Minimum 6 months of practical experience in:
    • Forest restoration
    • Natural resource management
    • Environmental conservation

The following will be considered added advantages:

  • Experience supervising field teams.
  • Previous work in Assisted Natural Forest Regeneration (ANFR).
  • Previous experience working in Nyungwe National Park.
