Kivu Choice Ltd is Rwanda’s largest protein producer and one of Africa’s fastest-growing aquaculture companies. Founded in 2022, the company is the sister company of Victory Farms, a leading aquaculture platform based in Kenya.

Kivu Choice operates a fully integrated aquaculture system, including:

  • Hatchery operations

  • Cage-based fish grow-out

  • Processing facilities

  • Distribution and sales

With over 700 employees, the company plans to expand to 1,200 employees within the next three years. Its long-term vision is to produce 30,000 tons of fish annually for the Rwandan market and export across the region.

Job Purpose

The Hatchery Foreman (Grounds Keeping) is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized hatchery environment, especially around ponds and operational areas.

The role includes supervising groundkeeping teams, managing maintenance tools and equipment, and ensuring biosecurity standards are maintained within the hatchery.

Responsibilities

1. Hatchery Grounds Cleanliness & Pond Safety (50%)
  • Supervise and participate in grass cutting around ponds, pathways, and hatchery premises.

  • Ensure pond embankments are stable, clean, and free from weeds or obstructions.

  • Monitor water channels to prevent blockages.

  • Maintain safe walking paths around ponds and operational areas.

  • Support hatchery biosecurity measures through proper sanitation.

  • Identify and report environmental risks such as:

    • Pond leaks

    • Soil erosion

    • Unsafe working conditions

  • Ensure hatchery grounds remain clean and hazard-free.

    2. Supervision & Workforce Management (20%)

  • Lead and supervise groundkeeping staff and casual workers.

  • Assign daily work tasks and monitor completion.

  • Track staff attendance and productivity.

  • Provide training on the safe use of tools and equipment.

    3. Equipment & Tools Management (20%)

  • Ensure proper use of tools such as:

    • Grass cutters

    • Slashers

    • Hoes

  • Report damaged tools and request replacements when necessary.

  • Maintain safe and organized storage of equipment.

    4. Reporting (10%)

  • Provide regular reports to the Hatchery Operations Supervisor.

  • Report environmental or structural risks affecting hatchery operations.

Requirements

Education

A Diploma or Certificate in one of the following fields is an advantage:

  • Agriculture

  • Aquaculture

  • Fisheries

  • Environmental Management

  • Related field

    Experience

  • 2–4 years of experience in:

    • Farm operations

    • Hatchery operations

    • Grounds maintenance

    • Supervisory roles

Experience in aquaculture or large-scale farm environments is preferred.

Required Skills

Technical Skills

  • Basic understanding of:

    • Pond management

    • Drainage systems

    • Grounds maintenance

    • Hatchery biosecurity practices

  • Ability to identify environmental risks such as erosion or water blockages.

    Supervisory Skills

  • Ability to lead groundkeeping staff and casual laborers.

  • Strong task management and productivity monitoring.

    Equipment Handling

  • Ability to safely operate and maintain farm tools and equipment.

    Personal Attributes

  • Strong communication and reporting skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Safety awareness

  • Physical ability to work in outdoor farm environments

  • High level of reliability and responsibility
