Overview

Health Builders, in partnership with the Gould Family Foundation (GFF), is seeking a qualified and motivated Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) to support the maintenance, repair, installation, and management of medical equipment in healthcare facilities across Rwanda. The successful candidate will work with healthcare providers, biomedical engineers, and partner organizations to improve medical equipment reliability, strengthen healthcare services, and promote sustainable biomedical equipment management systems.

The role will support Health Builders’ healthcare facilities in districts including Rwamagana, Rulindo, Nyabihu, Kicukiro, and Bugesera.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

Preventive and Corrective Maintenance

  • Develop and implement annual preventive maintenance plans.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair biomedical equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections of medical devices.
  • Maintain equipment service records using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Coordinate warranty claims and outsourced repairs with suppliers.

Equipment Installation and Inventory Management

  • Receive, inspect, and verify newly delivered medical equipment.
  • Support installation, commissioning, testing, calibration, and acceptance of equipment.
  • Maintain accurate biomedical equipment inventories.
  • Monitor equipment movement, replacement, and disposal.
  • Recommend replacement of obsolete or irreparable equipment.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Train healthcare workers on safe and effective equipment use.
  • Develop and update equipment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and user guides.
  • Support Health Builders’ user training programs.
  • Recommend refresher training when necessary.

Assessment, Reporting, and Coordination

  • Assess equipment performance and identify maintenance requirements.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual technical reports.
  • Develop maintenance schedules and spare parts budgets.
  • Monitor equipment utilization and recommend procurement priorities.
  • Coordinate with healthcare facilities, suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Support development of biomedical engineering policies and maintenance guidelines.
  • Promote sustainable biomedical equipment management practices.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and maintenance procedures.
  • Report safety incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform additional biomedical engineering duties assigned by management.

Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma (A1) in:
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Biomedical Equipment Technology
    • Medical Electronics
    • Electronics Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Or a related field.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of professional experience maintaining hospital biomedical equipment.
  • Experience working in hospitals or healthcare facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Good computer skills and ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda.

Added Advantages

Candidates with the following qualifications will have an added advantage:

  • Professional certification in biomedical equipment maintenance.
  • Experience maintaining equipment such as:
    • Patient monitors
    • Oxygen concentrators
    • Sterilizers
    • Incubators
    • Radiant warmers
    • Other hospital medical devices.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring, computer repair, or television repair.
  • Experience using CMMS systems.
  • Working knowledge of French.
