Overview

The United Nations is hiring a Resident Coordinator (Rwanda), the most senior UN leadership position at country level. This UN jobs Rwanda 2026 opportunity involves leading the UN Country Team (UNCT) and coordinating all UN development activities to support Rwanda’s progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDGs.

This role sits at the top of the UN development system, reporting directly to the UN Secretary-General, and is responsible for ensuring coherence, efficiency, and impact of all UN operations in Rwanda. It is one of the most prestigious international development jobs in Africa, ideal for experts in diplomacy, policy leadership, and multilateral coordination.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Representation

  • Represent the United Nations at the highest government and diplomatic levels
  • Engage with government, civil society, private sector, and international partners
  • Advocate for SDGs, human rights, gender equality, and inclusive development

UN System Coordination

  • Lead and coordinate the UN Country Team (UNCT)
  • Oversee development and implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework
  • Ensure alignment of UN programs with national development priorities

Development Planning & Policy

  • Guide implementation of the 2030 Agenda at country level
  • Lead Common Country Analysis (CCA) and strategic planning processes
  • Provide high-level policy advice and political analysis

Partnerships & Resource Mobilization

  • Build strategic partnerships with:
    • Governments
    • Donors and multilateral organizations
    • Private sector and academia
  • Mobilize funding for joint UN initiatives and development programs

Risk, Governance & Oversight

  • Identify and mitigate development, political, and operational risks
  • Ensure compliance with UN policies, donor frameworks, and regulations
  • Oversee country-level financing instruments and governance systems

Security & Crisis Coordination

  • Act as Designated Official for Security (if applicable)
  • Ensure safety of UN staff, premises, and operations
  • Lead coordination during humanitarian or crisis situations

Communication & Advocacy

  • Lead strategic communication to promote UN impact and SDG progress
  • Strengthen public awareness and stakeholder engagement

Requirements

Education

  • Master’s Degree in:
    • International Relations
    • Development Studies
    • Economics
    • Political Science
    • Law / Human Rights
    • Or related field

(Bachelor’s degree accepted with extensive relevant experience)

Experience

  • Minimum 15+ years of senior international leadership experience
  • At least 5 years in development, humanitarian, or peacebuilding roles outside home country
  • Prior experience as:
    • Resident Coordinator (preferred)
    • OR senior inter-agency leader

Preferred Expertise

  • Multi-sectoral program coordination in UN or multilateral systems
  • Strong background in political engagement and diplomacy
  • Experience in Great Lakes Region dynamics (added advantage)
  • Security leadership experience in complex environments

Eligibility & Special Conditions
  • Must be part of the UN Resident Coordinator Pool
  • Applicants cannot be nationals of Rwanda
  • Subject to mobility and international deployment requirements
  • Kigali classified as A Duty Station (low hardship)
